If you are a coffee addict like me, then you need access to great coffee throughout the day. I drink at least 10 cups of the brown stuff a day, morning, day and night. Is that excessive? Yes! I did say I was an addict, didn’t I?
But one of the problems with drinking coffee as frequently as I do is that having a pot sitting for hours at a time can result in a very unfresh taste. This is mainly the result of keeping the pot warm on the machine’s heated burner, and of air getting into the coffee. Such heated burner coffee makers with glass carafes are easy to use, but taste is the most important thing so these days I own a thermal carafe coffee maker, and will only buy thermal carafe machines in the future.
A thermal carafe is a stainless steel coffee pot that retains heat inside for hours at a time without having to use a heated burner, much like a thermos (notice the root of the word “thermos”). This results in a fresher, better-tasting blend throughout the day. You can open the carafe and pour yourself a cup several hours after preparation and the coffee will taste freshly brewed. The quality of thermal carafes of course varies, but they typically keep your coffee warm for 4-6 hours, sometimes even longer, and in terms of flavor it will still taste fresh even the next day.
Contrast that with a glass carafe coffee maker with a heated burner, which can keep your coffee heated for hours but every hour that passes diminishes the quality of the flavour. I personally notice a burnt flavour even an hour after brewing, and if the pot has been sitting on the burner for 2 hours or more then I can’t even drink its contents. That used to lead to me brewing smaller amounts of coffee more frequently, which was a bit of a pain in the neck.
Thermal carafe coffee makers are not perfect, because they do require you to preheat the water before you start brewing. This can lead to a bit of a time squeeze if you are in a hurry. But because of their superior ability to preserve the heat and flavor of every pot of coffee you make, you don’t have to make coffee as often as you would with a heated burner unit. If you drink java throughout the day and are as concerned with flavour as I am, then a thermal carafe coffee maker is essential.
